Bindi History: From Tradition To Fashion
Coming from India, the tradition of marking the forehead with a red painted bindi, was the indicator that the woman was married. This tradition dates back hundreds of years. Today the simple red dot has evolved into a variety of multicolored & elaborate, self adhesive designs. These newer bindis are often embellished with gems, small beading and other fanciful ornamentations. These fun body jewels are currently worn as fashion statement, not as a symbol of marital status. If a more traditional-oriented woman in today’s India wanted to display her marital status, she would most likely choose the simple red painted bindi of her great, great-grandmothers.
